Association Živojin Mišić has been declared winners of the national competition that will fight for the title of the best teacher of the world

The “National Teacher Prize” project is part of the "Global Teacher Prize" organized by the Varkey Foundation.

The Varkey Foundation was founded in 2010, with the belief that the teaching profession is the key to a global future. The Varkey Foundation believes that every child in the world deserves a high-quality teacher. Therefore, together with partners, they build a network of the world's best teachers, because they believe that this will enable equal education for all. One of the founders of the Foundation, Sunny Varkey, is guided by the idea that education alone can correct the biggest problems that the world has today, violence, power and health. Because everything starts with education.

The association Živojin Mišić has been a partner of the Varkey Foundation since last year, which means that the project "The Best Educators of Serbia" became a pre-qualification competition for the "National Teacher Prize". The goal is to select those who will present us in the world from the Best educators of Serbia.

Through this project, we want to praise, reward and encourage outstanding teachers in Serbia and give them the opportunity to find themselves at one of the world's largest education competitions, the "Global Teacher Prize".

This year's committee consisted of:

The criteria that the winners had to fulfill for the placement at "Global Teacher Prize" - this year was the use of effective teaching practices that affect the quality of education at the global level, the use of an innovative curriculum that is inspired by the method of solving new challenges in the future, personal achievements, the impact on the community, the development of students as a citizens of the world, the recognition of their work by the community.

After a lengthy discussion, and examining the applications of all applicants, content, activities, efforts to change their lives and the lives of their students, compliance with the Global Teacher Prize criteria, three candidates are separated from others according to above-average achievements.

By inspecting candidates' applications and submitted additional materials, and taking into account the criteria of the Varkey Foundation, the commission decided that the following candidates for the "Global Teacher Prize" are:

  • Dragan Kuveljić, a teacher at elementary school M. Stiković in Prijepolje
  • Katarina Veljković, teacher of computer and information science at the First Grammar School in Kragujevac
  • Tatjana Markovic Topalovic, physics teacher in high school, dr Andra Jovanović in Šabac

By choosing this year's candidates, we want to send a message that such teachers are extremely important and valuable to our society, and to encourage them to further improve and promote their methods of work and success.

Association Živojin Mišić continues cooperation with Varkey Foundation

The best educators of Serbia have the opportunity to apply for the competition for the best teacher in the world this year!

We are sure that you have either heard or felt on your skin that the teacher's job is not the most valued profession in the world. Various studies have shown that a small number of students really respect their teachers. It was also seen by the Varkey Foundation team, and in 2013 they decided to change things, or put them in place.

Sanny Varkey, founder of the Varkey Foundation, had the vision that education was the one that could solve the world's major problems, such as violence, power, and health. As he says, everything starts with education. The motto of his foundation is that every child in the world deserves a good teacher.

Two years later, they launched a project called Global Teacher Prize, with the desire to reward the best teachers of the world. What was important to them was to emphasize the importance of the role of teachers in the education and upbringing of children and to remind the world that teachers deserve to be one of the most valued professions in the world. Teachers are important! In 4 years of realizing the project, the Varkey Foundation awarded 4 teachers, from USA, Palestine, Canada and England. All winners received a million dollars reward to invest in their country's educational system, thus contributing to education in the country in which they work.

Association Živojin Mišić has recognized these motives in their work, and since last year, we are the proud partner of Varkey Foundation. The Cooperation Agreement was signed because the common goal is education, and the desire to remind that teachers are the most important link of our system, because they are the ones that educate our children. This year, the Association is proud of its country at the world's largest education competition.

What does it mean? The project, which has been successfully organized by the Association Živojin Mišić, The best educators of Serbia, by last year signing the Contract with the Varkey Foundation, has become a pre-qualification competition for the Global Teacher Prize.

This partnership means that the Association Živojin Mišić organizes the selection for the best teacher at the national level. The winner (or up to five winners) will have all possible assistance from the Association for further placement, application and promotion, but also an advantage over other candidates, as their applications will be found directly in the second round of evaluation at the Global Teacher Prize.

Last year, three teachers, holders of the title The Best Educators of Serbia, achieved success in this competition. Marinko Petković and Zvonimirka Jovičić were declared as the winners of the national competition in Serbia, and Željana Radojičić Lukić was placed in the top 50 teachers of the world at the Global Teacher Prize and she became the first Serbian teacher to achieve this placement in the competition. This brought our education back to a high rank of the world system.

This year, the opportunity for placement at the Global Teacher Prize, again gets up to five of Serbia's Best Educators.

At the beginning of December, the 50 best teachers of the world will be announced by the Varkey Foundation, and if one of our teachers is placed in the Top 50, he will have the opportunity to fight for a million dollar reward, as well as to be found at the world's largest education forum, Skills Forum in UAE.

How does GO promote Serbia?

Play GO - Train The Brain

EGCC, more commonly known as the European GO Cultural Center, announces a competition for GO promoters every third year. Mirjana Rašić Mitić, one of the Best Educators in Serbia, is a candidate for this prestigious international award with her team.

"When this year's competition appeared, my team and I thought and realized that in the past three years we have done a lot and we have something to say about our previous results on GO promotion. Also, we have a project that continuously lasts and continues in the next school year through another one approved by the CPN project: Play go - train the brain."

What is go?

GO is a Chinese game similar to chess, which was created 4000 years ago. Two players can play the game, and the rules are very simple. Players alternately place figures (which are called stones) on the cross-sections of the lines on the board. They have 19×19 sections available. The goal of the game is to fence as much of the board as possible and gain points. Strategy is a very important aspect of this constructive game through which children develop both logic and creativity.

"When starting the GO section, I did not think about whether I was the first teacher to deal with it. But the idea was certainly to offer some new activity to children, which will help them to overcome their school obligations, empower them, but also act as educators. Later, I became aware of the fact that this was done only in my school, and that fact also pointed to the way of spreading the idea of ​​learning GOs in other schools in Serbia."

"Through our GO school, there have been about 200 children up to the age of 6 to 18, among them talents such as Sara Djordjević, Vuk Dusanić, Nikola Ilić and our youngest hope Kosta Ilić. All the children who took part in the project had the opportunity to try some competition. We encourage them to participate in competitions, as they become better and strengthen their categories. To that end, we organized categorization tournaments, Sretenjski turnir, Niš Open - big international GO tournament in Niš, where participation for our children is free."

What obstacles did Mirjana meet at the beginning?

"The first obstacle we encountered in our work was the purchase of our own equipment. The desire to acquire my set was initiated by further actions and finding opportunities and means for acquiring the necessary materials for work. After the approved project by the CPN (Center for the Promotion of Science), who understood my efforts, as well as the children's welfare for dealing with this thought sport, the funds that we used for the purchase of sets were obtained by providing the conditions for our project to develop unimpededly.

The next obstacle was the provision of funds for inclusion of children in the system of competitions within the Go Union of Serbia, which is necessary for their further progress, which was also enabled by the CPN."

School support

Given that for most successful projects, teamwork is required, Mirjana was fortunate to gather a great team of associates who were ready to transfer their knowledge related to the GO game to children.

Thus, Zeljko Veselinović, Dragan Ilić, Mladen Lilić and Ivan Todorović from the Go Pro Club provided all the conditions for the formation of a section in the elementary school "Sveti Sava" in Niš (collections and expert work). Also, emphasized from the beginning, she had the understanding and full support of management and colleagues in the school, who recognized and supported the idea in the right way.

What is this candidacy for education in our country?

"This is the first time that anyone from our country has enough credibility to appear at such a competition.

In addition to promoting the GO and our project, this is at the same time an opportunity to promote Serbia and its educational system in the world as an advanced, creative and innovative one.

After the entry of Željana Radojičić Lukić, to a group of 50 best teachers of the world, when many were able to get to know the creativity of our teachers, I consider this is another opportunity to promote our country in a similar way."

What can be the expectations of the competition?

Mirjana is not prone to predictions and is satisfied with the nomination itself. Reading other projects, among which there are many who have done a lot on GO promotion, such as a project from Thailand, realized that our candidacy is not premature and that our results are truly worthwhile and competing with others.

If at least one teacher left a mark during your education, and he influenced you to become a better person. We believe this is one of the things that those who educate us should do. Perhaps it is now a chance to say thank you to one of them.

Being a teacher is one of the most challenging and beautiful occupations. Those who understand this understand without further explanation. However, this is also one of the most responsible occupations. We all know that educating younger generations is not a simple, but very comprehensive and demanding job.

Being a teacher means much more than transferring information from pupils' textbooks, assigning homework and evaluating. Being a good teacher means that you are both an educator, a pedagogue, an innovator, and a motivator.

We believe that a good teacher should not have a "mold". To transfer knowledge with a lot of creativity and imagination, to enrich children with applicable knowledge and prepare them for the challenges of the 21st century. Educators must be a step ahead of everyone, because they shape our future. We know it's not easy, and it's difficult for a teacher to be perfect to all his students. But if the teacher listens carefully and understands the needs of the students, encourages them to overcome obstacles, motivate them, and give them the freedom to teach him something, we believe that he is on the right path. It is impossible to be a teacher and not to be a student.

These are the teachers we want to find. And we are working on it since 2014, when the project The Best Educators has started. We want to find the best educators in Serbia and to show them how important they are to the future of our society. At the moment in our professional family we have 59 Best ones! But we do not want to stop there.

At the competition "In Plastic" The best educators took the first place

On the occasion of marking the World Environmental Day, this year a competition under the slogan: Win pollution with plastic! If you can not use it again, do not use it!

The United Nations Environment Agency - Program Office in Vienna, with the support of the regional NGO Forestry and Environmental Action and the Professional Association Ambassadors of Sustainable Development and Environment, organized the thematic competition "Tack with plastics!" Primary school students in the Republic of Serbia.

The aim of the competition was to raise children's awareness of the negative impact of plastic waste on human health and the environment, the possibilities for reuse and recycling of plastics, and the proper disposal of plastic waste.

In a competition that lasted for a month (from April 13 to May 14), 12 primary schools from Serbia applied for a total of 25 works. The expert commission took into account the description of the idea, the amount of used plastic packaging and other plastic items used for the construction of the vessel, as well as the appearance of the final work.

The rules were very simple. Teams, which means teacher-led departments organized a campaign to collect plastic waste material and used PET packaging, from which it was supposed to build a craft (boat, boat, etc.).

The best educators of Serbia responded to this challenge, and once again justified the flattering title they are carrying. From the first three places, the two came from the Best educators of Serbia, who showed their students that work and creativity are worth paying off.

The first place came to Tatjana Romanov pupils from the Primary School "Sveti Georgije" from Uzdin, for the work "Žutoplovac", and they found out for the contest through the Association Živojin Mišić. Tatjana was awarded as one of The best educators of Serbia in 2017.

Tatjana called her school the great nature conservationists and they gladly responded to this competition and created their work called "Žutoplovac". Her intention was to include as many children as possible in the project in order to develop ecological awareness and a sense of recycling. The message that Žutoplovec wants to convey is that one should not look for a patch in the laws of nature, but develop and preserve nature for the future generation, because they will symbolically pour into a cleaner and better nature.

Second place went to students of elementary school "Rade Dodic" from Milutovac, and third place to pupils of teacher Marijana Kolarić, also awarded in the project Best Educators of Serbia in 2016, for the work "Friendship Boat". Teacher Marijana is a head class teacher in the elementary school Petefi Brigade in Kula.

Elementary School Petefi Brigade from Kula applied with the work entitled "Friendship Boat” (Majin Bubamarica III-3). In order to present her work in the best way, Marijana's showed her preparations for this project in the following way. Swimming pool training, where students together with their teacher connected thematic days all about water, swimming, fishing and extending friendship, and thus consolidate the creation of the ship with all the activities.

With the project "In battle with plastic", she also connected materials from nature and society and materials in nature and recycling. We learned from the Serbian language the poem of Branko Radičević "Cic" or the so-called Ribarčeta, so the children thought about the Friendship Boat.

As the conceptual solutions come to the lessons of art culture, we wrote the messages of friendship we left in the bottles in the wall of the ship, collected objects from plastic, explains the teacher.

They say that the ship first got the name “Ship of Friendship”, which was later added to the “Maja bubamarica III-3”, because, as the parents of young students say, the teacher is Maja, and the pupils are her “bubamarice”.

Awards and exhibition of winning works was held today, June 5th, at the exhibition in the Fourteenth Regional Conference "Environment to Europe EnE18" in Belgrade.

Dragana Milicević, awarded educator in 2016, attended the award ceremony in front of the Association of Survival Schools, which deals with education of young people and teachers, as well as employees in local self-governments. In this way, once again she supported what she is doing in her career, which is to preserve the environment.

The exhibition was realized with the help of the Ambassador of Sustainable Development and Environment and the Serbian Chambers of Commerce.

The Uzdin team, which won the first position, was awarded a one-day excursion to Carska Bar with an accompanying interactive workshop, while the second and third place were awarded with an educational recycling game.


The best educator of Serbia opened the Philosophical and Creative Center

Aleksandar Stevanović, a philosophy professor at Tehnoart Belgrade School of Mechanical Engineering and Art Crafts, opened the Philosophical and Creative Center for Students in order to spread the philosophical culture and creative activity, education, project and workshop work.

Where did the idea of ​​the creation of the Philosophical and Creative Center come from?

"Working with children in high school, I noticed that the context of the usual teaching process does not suit modern generations. The current 19th century, which still governs the educational system, are far behind the needs and abilities of today's children. I realized that it is necessary to transform the concept of teaching itself, setting in person the personality of students instead of adopting a rigidly prescribed, quantified knowledge" says Stevanović.

Self-confidence develops with a freely chosen and successfully performed activity, followed by a sense of accomplishment, and the breadth that philosophy, as an object of access to personality, enables precisely this kind of action.

From idea to realization

"After receiving the award of the Association Živojin Mišić within the project "The Best Educators of Serbia 2016", which also withdrew money, I decided to spend the money for the existence of something that could last for a long time. So in the end of 2017 I acquired a number of disassembled tables and chairs for performing workshops and programs in the open, as well as a certain number of books for the launch of the Philosophical Library", says the teacher.

For the needs of the Center, students in the school made a number of decorative lamps and seating pads on the grass and provided the conceptual, visual and marketing solutions needed for the beginning of its work.

We all know that Aristotle kept his lectures outdoors and how this positive impact had on young people. Today, the Center just reminds us, and it returns us to the roots of philosophical learning.

Thanks to the school director Nenad Mladenovic, teacher Stevanović received the inner courtyard of the school for use, and thanks to the unselfish help of his associates, the Philosophical and Creative Center is now in the "Tehnoart Beograd" school.

After almost six months of preparation, the Center is open!

"We are here now to be able to influence. This place was made to be like a torch of happiness. Like the hearth of joy. As something that will last, and in one context of time, enter another sound, another sign. It is obvious that a school of concrete and steel, in which the pupils are reduced to screws and nuts, is overcome. We need to get back here among these trees. Let's feel that there is one gift we forgot about "- the teacher Aleksandar began with these words.

Mr. Slobodan Kanjevac, president of the Serbian Philosophical Society, was the special guest of the opening of the Center. He emphasized the importance of establishing such a Center and provided full support to this concept of teaching and to the teacher Stevanović, for which he has been cooperating for many years.

Coordinator of the Association Živojin Mišić, Ivona Jovanović, sent all congratulations to Aleksandar, emphasized how proud they are that Stevanović is part of their professional family and that in their team they have the best educators of Serbia who are changing our world for the better.

The opening ceremony was attended by students, former pupils of this school, guests, colleagues of Professor Aleksandar, school director, friends, philosophers, and the students of Professor Aleksandar also performed their author's performance for all participants.

The aim of the Philosophical and Creative Center

What is one of the main goals of the Philosophical and Creative Center is the development of entrepreneurial competences among young people. Entrepreneurship is rightly presented as one of the essential goals of the educational process and therefore the Center wants to focus its work on an extremely important area - entrepreneurship in culture. Teacher Aleksandar thinks that along with the philosophical side of the Center, through the work of the pupil cooperative oriented towards the creation of cultural contents, in the "Tehnoart Belgrade" school, the right way could develop the entrepreneurial spirit of future young creators in culture.

The best gift of the students of this school is that through various projects, workshops and other activities of the Center, it will be possible to connect various contents with the goal of cultivating and working, as well as providing the students with the opportunity to be able to master the necessary knowledge at the same time, to relieve stress and feel devotion in their own work. The Center also provides young people with a wide range of educational activities, through their play and creativity, to re-establish their creative potentials.

Successfully realized sixth "New hopes of Chess"!

On May 12, 2018, the "New Hopes of Chess" tournament was held for the sixth consecutive year. This year, five different tournaments were played at the Central Serbian Army Home in Belgrade, where the chess strength was overtaken by over 130 contestants. In the former Yugoslavia and Serbia, the most important chess events were organized on this site, so we are particularly honored to have the opportunity to keep the sixth tournament for the third year in a row.

The Association for the Promotion of Entrepreneurship "Živojin Mišić", in cooperation with the Military Academy and Military Gymnasium, gathered children from several cities of Serbia, and this is what this tournament distinguished from the rest. For the first time, Team Town Tournament, children under 14, attended by teams from Novi Sad, Pancevo, Požarevac, Niš, Kragujevac, Gornji Milanovac and two teams from Belgrade - Zemun and Novi Beograd. In addition to this tournament, preschoolers, children under the age of 18, also competed, the Serbian Army traditionally fought for the trophy of the Duke of Živojin Mišić, and tournaments were also attended by representatives of IT companies as well as amateurs who are in love with chess.

The chess also assembled the kid, the parents, the cadets of the Military Academy, the students of the Military Gymnasium, soldiers, officers, pensioners of the Army of Serbia. Among the guests were the holders of international chess titles, media representatives, international masters, representatives of chess federations, media representatives ... Dušan Cogoljević, President of the Chess Federation of Serbia, Ambassador Džordž Mor, Executive Director of the European Chess Union, Mirjana Sekulić, Director of Preschool Institution " April "from New Belgrade …

Djordje Stojkovic, actor of the Army Academy series, was a special guest at this year's tournament, which on behalf of all the actors came to encourage the youngest participants, and once again points to the power of this ancient game. It is arranged that next year we will also make matches with children and actors!

The opening ceremony was marked this year by the children of Preschool Institutions "11. April "from New Belgrade, the hymn of their chess tournaments" Chess is the Real Spell ". PU "11. April "has been organizing chess competitions for her child under the title of" Chess Preschool Olympics "for 12 years. Their four most successful teams found their place at the Preschool Preschoolers' House.

After the great performance of the horses, competitors and audience were welcomed by the speech of Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Davor Mikluc, who spoke for the Serbian Army. Beseda about the Duke Zivojin Mišić was successfully presented by the cadet of the second year of the Military Academy Mladen Šebek, and on behalf of the Association "Živojin Mišić" addressed Ivan Bjelajac who reminded him why chess is important and why the Association supports this game.

Competition for Best Educators of Serbia for 2018 year is now opened

What makes one teacher remarkable? What does it mean today to be the best teacher and what is adequate knowledge? What are the teachers whom the students remember and who might have inspired them to deal with their current profession in life? How much is a teacher important for the proper growth of new generations and a healthy society? Do we respect and support them sufficiently?

The "Živojin Mišić" Association launched ithe project "The Best Educators in Serbia" in 2014, with the wish to emphasize prominent examples of our education. Teachers of primary and secondary schools who have been awarded for four years of realization of this project are distinguished by innovation, commitment, activism, readiness to learn, to improve themselves and adapt to modern educational needs, to apply new methods and resources in teaching, to teach pupils how to apply knowledge and thus prepare them for modern labor market demands. They are the drivers of positive changes in their environment, pioneers of progress and achieving top-quality results and as such we can freely call them entrepreneurs in their business.

In four years of the realization of this project, a total of 59 best teachers from Serbia, from urban and rural schools were awarded.

Therefore, it is our great pleasure to announce the fifth competition for the Best Educators in Serbia!

In order to improve the competition, this year's application will consist of two parts. The first part of the application will be done exclusively through the Association's website, (, and students, their parents, colleagues, teachers, school directors or someone who has an insight into the work of teachers can to send an application for them. On the basis of this application, the first round of selection of candidates will be performed.

Candidates who pass the first round of the selection will be contacted by the e-mail so that the organizers can send them the second part of the application, which would show the professional development of the candidates and provide additional information.

Based on both applications and interviews with candidates, the commission will select up to 10 teachers from primary and secondary schools in Serbia.

Applications will be open until 1st of July, and the winners will be announced by the end of the year. Each award-winning educator will receive a personal prize of 40,000 rsd, as well as 100,000rsd that he/she can invest in projects with children and teaching improvement.

Association Živojin Mišić is a national partner of the Varkey Foundation

For the first time this year, the Association "Živojin Mišić" had one of its ambassadors at the largest world forum "Global Teacher Prize", held in the United Arab Emirates. In March, last week, at this competition, Serbia was a country that could proudly show that have its national representative in the competition - the Association for the Promotion of Entrepreneurship, Živojin Mišić.

Leaders from the private, public and social sectors gathered for the sixth consecutive year to work together to find solutions to the problem of raising education to a higher level, as well as the problem of equality and employment for all.  

The Varkey Foundation initiative, which organizes the Global Teacher Prize Competition, the Global Education & Skills Forum is actually a platform for cooperation and problem solving, moving from "How It Should be" to innovative solutions "How We Come There Together". In this regard, the Global Education & Skills Forum gathered over 2000 professionals from the world of education who worked on system design and preparations for 2030 when all of us expect great changes in the way of thinking and how to teach children.

Why is this Forum special for Serbia?

The Global Education & Skills Forum and all the way to the United Arab Emirates has brought much good to Serbia when it comes to the education sector. One of the most important events is that the Varkey Foundation got an official partner in our country - the Association for Entrepreneurship Promotion Živojin Mišić, whose task is to organize and conduct the election for the national winner in Serbia from now on and help find the best teacher in the world.

Another important event is the proclamation of Željana Radojičić Lukić, a teacher from Banja Vrujci, for one of the 50 best educators in the world. In addition to being one of the Best Educators of Serbia, she has now entered history as the first representative of our country in this competition, which is believed to be in the ranking of the Nobel Prize competition in the teaching profession. Consequently, she became one of the Varkey Foundation ambassadors.

"The delegation is really pleased with both our hosts and the atmosphere in this world educational forum, and I am very happy to represent Serbia here in Dubai. My dear teachers, together we will fight to improve Serbian education in the upcoming period and continue to promote Serbia in the best possible way in the world", says Željana.

How did the competition run and what kind of workshops were prepared by the organizers?

For the first two days of the stay in Dubai, the Serbian delegation had the opportunity to attend the Varkey Teacher Ambassadors workshops aimed at networking, linking and presenting projects around the world. The idea was to find a solution to how best to prepare children for the future and the 2030s reforms.

The second two days of the Forum held in Atlantis, our delegation attended numerous workshops where some of the most prominent people in their areas spoke, of which the most important for Serbia was the National Teacher Partners Workshop. This workshop exchanged experiences, successes and challenges that national partners meet in conducting these elections in their countries. The goal was to improve national elections, and this is the place where our delegation learned the most. The association Živojin Mišić exchanged experiences with representatives of Chile, Palestine, Ukraine, America, Sierra Leone and other partner countries of the Varkey Foundation. What is rated as the highest value of the Forum is that it has given us the opportunity of networking, and that we are now all in the same team that is struggling for a better future.

The act of ceremonial awards and gala dinners was held on the fourth day where the representative of England - Andria Zafirakou received the Global Teacher Prize Award. The prize was personally handed over to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy President and Minister of the United Arab Emirates. We congratulate her with all her heart and we hope she will continue with the brilliant work she has shown so far, like all the other Varkey ambassadors. Special congratulations for our representative Željana Radojičić Lukić, who together with the Association Živojin Mišić promoted Serbia in the best possible way. And let's not forget that "every child deserves exceptional teachers, because teachers are important!"
