Danijela Rakić and Goran Jovišić, the candidates for the Yidan Prize

The best educators of Serbia are contending for the prestigious world award the Yidan Prize amounting to 3.9 million dollars

Dr Charles Chen Yidan, one of the most famous Chinese Internet entrepreneurs and philantropists, established the Yidan Prize which amounts to 3.9 million dollars. The award is presented to the individuals for their exceptional achievements in research and development in education. The prize recognizes and supports the teachers all around the world, whose innovations have sustainable influence on the education system of today and future.

The Association "Zivojin Mišić" has been a partner of the Yidan Fondacije since last year, which means that the project of the Association “The Best Educators of Serbia” has become a prequalification for the Yidan Prize, and this year's candidates for that award are Danijela Rakić and Goran Jovišić!

Danijela and Goran, who have been chosen as the Best Educators of Serbia, are the first Serbian teachers – the candidates for this prestigious award for the research on the development in the field of education.

For what do Danijela Rakić and Goran Jovišić stand out?

Danijela Rakić

Danijela Rakić is a teacher of accordion and chamber music in Music School “Kosta Manojlović“ in Zemun.

She is one of the best educators of Serbia who received this acknowledgement in 2017.

Having worked for more than two decades as a teacher, as her colleagues say, she is still an example of an educator who exhudes her enthusiasm and motivation in her everyday work with students. Teacher danijela, with her students, has received over 280 awards in 30 countries in the world! Her colleagues say that a large number of her awards is a consequence of her sincere, everyday dedication and research and following music in the world, through the work in international juries, her engagement in seminars, competitions and congresses. Striving to connect Serbia with the world in her profession (which is seen through prestigious world awards) is what separates teacher danijela from others.

As a teacher of a chamber subject and accordion, Danijela manages to involve parents through both concerts and other plans and conversations, aiming at parents' constant monitoring of the development of their children.

Danijela is a pedagogical counsellor and teacher mentor, she holds experimental lessons for teachers beginners. She is said to always point at the different use of various methods of teaching and the ways of generating the motivation of students. She has been head of Belgrade's section of accordionists for 10 years and manager of regional accordion sections, member of the world confederation of accordionists (in France), member of the association “Muzičko sazvežđe“ and, also, a member of the professional committee “Olympic Games“ (in Slovenia). She is a member of several more professional societies operating in Serbia and regional countries.

Some of the achievements are: the award Zajednice muzičke škole, Belgrade (2015), plaque UMPS Vivače, Lazarevac (2015), acknowledgement by MA, Istočno Sarajevo (2010-2015), annual award of Music School “K. Manojlović“ (2005-2009, 2015), award BGIKU, Russia...

Her motto is “Only by adequate approach love and interest in music can be developed“.

For the Yidan Prize she has applied with the theme “The Systems of Lifelong Learning“ and her research deals with the systems of lifelong learning, literacy for all, teachers and skills for the work and life in a modern age.

Goran Jovišić

Goran Jovišić is a teacher of computer science and informatics in Grammar School of Sremski Karlovci, in Sremski Karlovci.

He is one of the Best Educators of Serbia who received this acknowledgement in 2015.

He is one of the founders and head of the Association of the Teachers of Informatics in Serbia. His colleages say that he stands out because of his unselfish and dedicated work, being an excellent organizer and the initiator of innovative and creative ideas, use of new technologies and software in teaching.

His students take part in various competitions and projects and win first places. One of these is “Zagrizi budućnost“, the competition in the field of graphic design, international mathematics conference “Karlovački uzori“, the project of the instruction of knowledge and skills, necessary for modern entrepreneurship and many others.

He is a participant and the initiator of various activities at school: lectures on digital violence “The Role of School in the Prevention and Stopping Digital Violence“, “May, the Month of Mathematics“, “The Day of Number PI“ in Grammar School of Sremski Karlovci“, “The Use of Digital Software in Inclusive Teaching“, the state competition “The Website for the Safe Internet“... He is the organizer of the international week of programming “Code Week“ in his school.

By the use of innovative methods in teaching, he makes it possible for students to work independently, to solve problems on their own, at their own pace and learn in this way. He uses the correlation of various subjects, so students digitalized the books in German in the field of informatics and the German language, which they translated later, and they made a dictionary of IT terms.

He is an author and fellow worker in numerous publications and research, he is a participant of a great deal of seminars, national and international conferences. He is a member of several national and foreign professional organizations: “CSTA – Computer Science Teacher Association“ (New York, USA), “Internet Society IOC“ (Geneva, Switzerland), “ACM – Association for Computer Machinery for K-12 Computer Science Education“ (New York, USA), “European Mathematical Society“ (Helsinki, Finland).

He has applied for the Yidan Prize with the theme “The Use of Free Software in Educational Institutions in Serbia“ and his research deals, among other things, with teachers, education for sustainable development and ICT in education.

The results of the Yidan Prize competition will be known in September this year and, until then, we will support the candidates representing Serbia in this world competition, Danijela Rakić and Goran Jovišić!

Delegation of Serbia at the Global Education & Skills Forum in Dubai

The Association "Živojin Misic" is the official national partner of the  “Varkey”  Foundation in Serbia and the proud signatory of this agreement. This year as well, the Association has had its representative among the top 50 teachers of the world, and this is  Katarina Veljković, an exceptional teacher of informatics from Kragujevac with measurable results and research in Serbia and the world!

Global Education & Skills forum has been held for the seventh year in a row, from 22 nd to 25 th March in the United Arab Emirates. This year's winner is  Peter Tabichi from Kenya! In the forum where the winner of the “Global Teacher Prize” competition is chosen, Serbia took part with  its delegation.

Who forms the official team of the Serbian delegation?

Our team consisted of Katarina Veljković, a teacher of informatics, one of the 50 best teachers of the world; Tatjana Marković Topalović, a teacher of physics from Šabac; Dragan Kuveljić, a primary school teacher from Prijepolje and Ivona Jovanović, the coordinator of the Association "Živojin Misic" as representative of the national partner "Varkey" Foundation.

The mission of the Forum

Leaders from the world of private, public and social sector have gathered for the seventh year in a row to work together on topics that are in the limelight of education, and one of them is a change of attitude towards educational technologies. Srđan Verbić, one of the members of the Atlantis Group - a group of the world's best former ministers, who has been a honorary participant in this forum for years, explained what the focus was in this year. The point is that learning which will solve all problems is no longer considered a central thing and that artificial intelligence and educational technologies help teachers in their work with children.

The Forum is a place where the importance is placed on a teacher, where their profession is respected as one of the most important ones in the world and where the possibilities for networking with their colleagues worldwide are within reach to everyone.

Why is this forum important for Serbia and for the Association “Živojin Mišić”?

A significant fact is that Serbia has strengthened the position of the national partner the Association "Živojin Misic". Vikas Pota, head of the Varkey Foundation, gave full support to the Serbian delegation and praised all efforts made by the Association in its country.

Commendation for the selection of this year's candidates, the national representatives, was another great plus, especially for Katarina Veljković, one of the 50 best teachers in the world!

The conversation with Rebecca Warbrick (the "Global Teacher Prize" marketing director) and the national partners of other countries in the world went in a strategic direction of enhancing education in each country separately. A special emphasis was on the actions of non-governmental organizations which should work on encouraging education and giving importance to the profession of teachers and teachers themselves.

What is the Global Education & Skills Forum like?

The Forum brought together 297 speakers (top experts in the field of education and related fields), 40 ministers of education, 7 former ministers of education, over 2200 delegates from 114 countries and over 200 media representatives.

The organizers of the forum have made a step forward even this year by allowing a ten-year-old Braydon Bent, a TV presenter, to lead the first panel discussion on the importance of education. Braydon emphasized that all teachers in this world should make more effort, mainly because of the children like him, which showed that empathy is an imperative of modern education.

The CEO of the Varkey Foundation, Mr Vikas Pota, welcomed all teachers, participants, national partners around the world and conference participants, praising their work, pursuit and objectives they had set for themselves.

Katarina Veljković had the opportunity to attend the VTA workshops (Varkey Teacher Ambassadors), which were aimed at networking, linking and presenting projects around the world. Our representative spoke about the projects that she conducted with her students, both in the local environment and in the world, and for which she has been awared several times by numerous international organizations. On the other hand, her colleagues Tatjana and Dragan had the opportunity to listen to almost all sessions in which they were interested, to debate and evaluate, and with the aim of further professional development and sharing new information in their country.

For the next two days of the Forum, which was held in the Atlantis Hotel, the three-member Serbian delegation attended a number of workshops at which the most prominent people in their field of education gave a talk; the top 10 teachers of the world held "Masterclasses" (model classes which they hold).

The award presentation ceremony and gala evening were held on the fourth day of the Forum, where the Global Teacher Prize Award was given to the representative of Kenya - Peter Tabichi. He was presented the award by Hugh Jackman, a great Hollywood star. Peter Tabichi is a chemistry teacher who teaches in a mixed secondary school, in a semi-dry part of the Rift Valley, and, despite poverty, he manages to win first places in the competitions in Kenya and send his pupils to those at the world level. With his students he makes the devices which enable blind and deaf people to measure objects, motivates his students to enrol at university, helps them cope with the problems in the street and be the best version of themselves. In addition, Peter invests 80% of his revenues in school and in the help to the poor.

The benefits of the Forum for our teachers and for the Association “Živojin Mišić”

The aim of the arrival of our delegation at this world significant event was the networking with the best teachers of the world, exchange of information, tolerance, interculturality, support, learning new teaching methods, approaches, collaborations at the international level, and the research for possible changes in the education of Serbia.

“I am very pleased with my participation because I have met a lot of wonderful teachers with whom, I hope, I will cooperate. What is most important and what we receive as teachers is sharing knowledge and information which we have not had so far and what makes us important is that we are the teachers who prepare students for the 21st century and that as individuals we can do a lot”, said Katarina Veljković.

Tatjana Marković Topalovic thinks that a benefit for Serbia is, above all, its participation in this Forum, for teachers - a large number of international contacts and that our country, regardless of its size and population, is very noticeable. Dragan Kuveljić added that this exchange had made him richer and prouder with reference to the job he does and that one of the messages from the Forum is that the world can change if our education is better, or if it is worked with teachers.

What is important for us as an association is certainly the consolidation of the position of the national partnership, the opportunity of implementing next national elections even more successfully and, also, the contacts which we have made with influential people from the world of education, economy and public sector and which can be our support for further projects.

We express deep gratitude even to the sponsors who helped the departure of the Serbian delegation for the Global Education and Skills Forum and they are: the city government of the City of Šabac, Primary School "M. Stiković" from Prijepolje, publishing company "Kreativni Centar", publishing company "Eduka", publishing company "Logos", publishing company "Klett", company "Refleks" from Šabac and the studio "Maruška".

The best educators of Serbia donated books "Elementary School Miloš Gajić" in Donja Trešnjica

On Friday, March 25, 2019, the small village school "Miloš Gajić", which has 11 pupils from the 1st to the 4th grade, got the first school library!

How did we get this idea?

In 2016, Branislava Živanović, a successful professor of defectology at the elementary school "Dušan Dulagić" in Belgrade for many years, was among 16 prominent teachers in the third edition of the award for the best educators in Serbia.

This phenomenal teacher, at that time, at a meeting of the best Serbian teachers, suggested that one of the joint actions of educators is to donate books to children who are not able to buy or buy them.

The Association was pleased to support this action, as this is one of the ways that young people are encouraged to learn, develop, and see the world from multiple angles.

Over the past year, educated workers in previous generations have sent the Association of Books that we gave last Friday to those they intended. About 200 books were given to various topics.

Why Donja Trešnjica?

Why did Branislava Živanović suggest only Donja Trešnjica? According to her, the curiosity of this site is that at the University there were 5 professors, and that it is always fascinated by the fact that so many people come from small towns.

We hope to encourage children who have enriched their school on Friday to learn and progress. For, as Lao Cs says, "learning is ascending as soon as it stops, it moves immediately." Reading is education and learning.

Because of that, beside children, the library also treated their families, which will now be able to read much more than before.

Once again, we thank Branislav Zivanovic on a great initiative, as well as all educators who donated books for children from Donja Trešnjica.

The Association “Živojin Mišić“ has become a national partner of the Yidan Prize!

The Best Educators of Serbia have the opportunity to fight for another prestigious award in the world

Some people say that education is a process of obtaining the information about the outside world and they are probably right. But they forget the fact that information cannot be transformed into knowledge without education. When we talk about knowledge, we do not deal only with the lessons from a textbook. We are talking about life lessons. This has inspired us to search for new projects which will bring Serbian education to the world level.

Who is Dr Charles Chen Yidan?

Dr Charles Chen Yidan is one of the most famous Chinese Internet entrepreneurs and philantropists. In 2016 he founded an award Yidan with a mission to make the world a better place through education, because he believes that only education can make a difference in the life of an individual.

The connection of the Association Živojin Mišić and the Yidan Prize

The people who follow our work know that we make an effort to create more opportunities for our teachers to show their work in the world and to exchange good teaching practices with the best ones in order that our children have better conditions for schooling and for life as well.

This is why we have come into contact with the foundation which organizes the Yidan Prize. After we had found out that we had the same goals as non-governmental organizations, and this is encouraging education and placing importance on the best teachers who educate our children, we concluded an agreement with the Yidan foundation.

In this way the Association Živojin Mišić became an organization which has the right to nominate the best teachers of our country for the competition “The Yidan Prize“ via the project “The Best Educators of Serbia“. Today “The Best Educators of Serbia“ is a project which is a pre-qualification both for the Yidan Prize and the Global Teacher Prize, the two great world awards!

Who has the right to participation?

The right to participation in the competition “The Yidan Prize“ have all teachers in primary and secondary schools who are the winners of the award “The Best Educators of Serbia“, who actively work in teaching.

The best educators of Serbia can apply for the prestigious competition via the application form which they receive from the Association Živojin Mišić.

Since the candidates for this competition cannot apply on their own, but only via the Association which is a national partner of “The Yidan Prize“ now, I consider this great benefit for our teachers, the Best Educators of Serbia.

What is the prize?

The Yidan Prize is given to the individuals with the considerable accomplishments in education research and development.

Yidan Prize recognizes and supports individuals all over the world, whose innovations have sustainable influence on education system of today and the future.

The prize is given once a year and aims at strengthening the creators of the changes in education, building a global community of educated leaders and creating long-lasting, positive influence on mankind as a whole.

Every winner of the Yidan Prize (either an individual or a team up to three members) will receive a certificate, gold medal and HK $30 million (about US $3.9 million) of the award - one half is the award in cash and the other half can be used as a project fund in the period of three years.

You can read here more about the last year's winners of this prestigious competition, best teachers in education research and development and we hope that we will also see someone from the Best Educators of Serbia soon!

Hereby we would like to encourage both current and future generations of the Best Educators of Serbia to apply and show the world that Serbian education is at the world level! Applications are being accepted!

The awards have been given to the fifth generation of the Best Educators of Serbia

On Thursday, December 27th, 2018 in the Moskva Hotel awards were given to the Best Educators of Serbia of 2018.

The year 2018 has been a great jubilee of both the Association and this project. Five years have passed since the foundation of the Association for the Promotion of Entrepreneurship Živojin Mišić and this is the fifth generation of the Best Educators of Serbia which we awarded.

At the celebration on the occasion of giving awards to the best teachers which our country has, numerous guests from the sphere of education, the best teachers of Serbia and numerous co-workers and colleagues of the Association of Živojin Mišić assembled.

The programme was opened by Mila Đačić and Tara Đačić with the composition “Horovod” after which the students of Danijela Rakić, Jovan Tomić and Luka Simović introduced themselves to us with the compositions “Kaćuša” and “Tarantela”. We would like to thank Mila Đačić and Danijela Rakić again, music teachers and the awarded educators of the year 2017, for their help in the organization of this celebration. The musical part of this programme made a special impression on this day.

During the opening of the ceremony, the coordinator of the Association Ivona Jovanović welcomed all guests, having emphasized the pride of the Association in their celebrating this day and being in the company of the best in Serbia. “Today, one more time, we are giving acknowledgement to the best among us, the people contributing most to it that our country has a bright future. Five years for us is not a small thing, but a kind of a jubilee. The first in a row and we believe and we will work on having many more of them”.

We looked back even on the very beginning when the Association was founded in 2013, wishing to enhance society and support entrepreneurship, because we believed then that it was a formula for economic progress and recovery of the country. We believe in it even today and this is why we reminded ourselves, in the year which marks 100 years since the end of the First World War, of it why our association bears the name just after Živojin Mišić, the largest Serbian army leader and strategist.

Lela Đokić, who was the coordinator of the Association in its early years and led the project The Best Educators of Serbia, also addressed all attendees. “When I look back, I think that this action was very brave and at times terrifying – two people who had not had any contact with education and teaching so far decided to change things for the sake of their own idealism. Some people will say that this is half-crazy and I will say that today the Association Živojin Mišić has been giving the only such comprehensive award to teachers in Serbia for five years in a row. If you ask me if we have succeeded, I will tell you that we have a lot of things to do. But, I also think that we have moved a ball of wool which is unravelling unstoppably nowadays and is embroidering the threads of new successes and accomplishments. This hall is overcrowded with people appreciating education and our work. It was not so five years ago. I would like each of you in this room to stop for a moment and realize how great success and progress are, borne by this project and this award, because little of this existed five years ago.”

Vladimir Prelovac, the founder and chairman of the Association, was not able to attend this celebration, but he had written a speech, read on his behalf by Ivona Jovanović, the coordinator of the Association. We have singled out part of this address “The awarded educators, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your unselfish help and all made effort and energy in setting children in Serbia on the right track. From my own personal experience I know that your own personal example of dedication will be a guiding star for many children and, later, mature people at difficult moments in life which will come inevitably. Although they never say it to you, bear in mind that they will think many times in their life about you and about your deeds.”

Vladimir Prelovac had expressed deep gratitude towards the members of the jury, awarded educators and all fellow workers for unselfish help for this project since its beginning. “By your own experience and integrity you have made this project possible and we owe you very much as the Association. Our civic duty is to shape our society and environment in a way that we want them to be for our children. It is not reasonable to expect from any country to take care of everything, of us either. We ourselves are responsible for our own destiny and our decisions. This is the reason why the Association Živojin Mišić was founded and we have focused just on the area which can produce the largest change in society over the long term, and this is education. Educated youth will have power in their hands to change the world. How much good one idea in the head of one child can bring to the world and to all of us. We are here to thank all educators who are expanding vistas to our children and making it possible for such an idea to be born one day”!

Srđan Verbić is one of the people who support the work of the Association since its very beginning. He has pointed out that “It’s a great honour to be part of this project and a large Association who concurrently pushes several projects for which it is not known which will blossom first and which will be the most successful.” Srđan has taken part in almost all projects of the Association so far in some way, and when we look back on the project of the Best Educators of Serbia, Srđan says “As soon as I received the invitation and the opportunity to take part in the first award presentation ceremony for the Best Educators, I accepted it, of course. All the more so that there are more equal awards. This is an exceptionally important moment. Today we have 69 best teachers, and there are even more of them. There are always more candidates for whom we are sorry that they have not been chosen for the award than those for whom we think that they do not deserve to be here.” One more time he gave his sincere congratulations to all the awarded.

Another lady who has been with us since the beginning of the implementation of the project the Best Educators of Serbia and a long-standing board member is also Dragica Pavlović Babić, the coordinator of the PISA research in Serbia. She has pointed out that one of the largest benefits of this project is the expansion of good practices among educators, because they are those who have shown initiative, originality and creativity, and that after all those years it seems to her natural that this project lasts even for a longer period of time.

At the end of the celebration, we could see and hear our ten most magnificent, best educators of Serbia for the year 2018. These are:

  • Aleksa Popadić, geography teacher from Kraljevo
  • Aleksandar Mijalković, Serbian teacher from Inđija
  • Ivana Kovačević, Serbian language and literature teacher from Belgrade

  • Zoran Ilić, general education teacher from Leskovac

You can read more about them here.

After the award presentation ceremony five generations of the Best Educators of Serbia took part in the workshops which the educators had organized for their colleagues.

Boško Petrović, the awarded educator of the year 2017, held the workshop “Znanjem bez granica“[With knowledge there are no boundaries] where he talked about the possibility of networking the best educators of Serbia via various projects and about the spread of educational mission. The headteacher of Boško’s school Snežana Tanić also addresssed us, expressing deep gratitude because he was among the best and talking about big influence of this project on the schools of Paraćin.

Katarina Veljković, awarded in 2016 and one of the 50 best teachers of the world in 2018 within the competition The Global Teacher Prize, shared her experience with her colleagues. We wish Katarina success and we are happy that our education is with our teachers who are placed high on the ladder in the world!

Katarina Ivanović and Danilo Borovnica held the workshop “Erasmus +”. Zorica Ivanović shared her experience with her colleagues at the workshop “Frequency dictionaries” and Velimir Radlovački talked about “Teachers on the Internet in 2019” and informed his colleagues about safety on the Internet at first hand.

Besides this, Violeta Miletić held the workshop “The First Step of Successful Entrepreneurship” and Marinko Petković talked about “Great Myths about Small Places”.

A big thanks to all our educators who shared their knowledge with their colleagues and showed once more that they are open for cooperation and that knowledge is the most valuable when it is shared.

In the end, Vera Mijović, the instructor of business and development skills, held the workshop for the Best Educators of Serbia, named “The Strategy of a Successful Public Appearance”, aiming at helping the educators in coping with cameras and enhancing their appearance as much as possible.

One more time a big thanks to all friends of education who celebrated the huge day for the Association with us yesterday and lent solemnity to it by their attendance!

The photos from the award presentation ceremony can be seen here.

Serbia is in the final of the Global Teacher Prize Competition again!

Katarina Veljković, one of the Best Educators of Serbia entered the Top 50 best teachers in the world.

This year as well, the nonprofit, nongovernmental Association Živojin Mišić has selected the representatives for the competition Global Teacher Prize which is believed to be at the level of the Nobel Prize. Katarina Veljković, teacher of informatics and computer science in the First Grammar School of Kragujevac, has entered the 50 best teachers of the world, and thereby Serbia was placed high on the ladder in the sphere of education as well

The Global Teacher Prize Competition has existed for five years in a row and aims at finding the best teachers in the world and showing that their profession is one of the most important in every country.

The former winners of this competition come from the United States, Palestine, Canada and the United Kingdom, and now even Serbia has the opportunity to be the first!

Katarina Veljković, who has been working as a teacher for 14 years, has always tried to find and remove the flaws of educational system and to give students the true anwer to the question: “Why am I learning this, what purpose does it serve me?” Numerous projects which she has carried out with children during her career and the catchphrase which guided her through life “Imagination is more important than knowledge” have contributed to her success in teaching over 1400 students. Nowadays she can say with merit that she is one of the best teachers of the world too

Besides this, Katarina holds the title of one of the Best Educators of Serbia, which was awarded by the Association Živojin Mišić two years ago within the same project. The Association also brought the Global Teacher Prize to Serbia. As a national partner of the Varkey Foundation which organizes this competition, the Association Živojin Mišić has been selecting the best out of the best for the second year in a row. Željana Radojičić Lukić, general education teacher from Mionica and the Best Educator of Serbia in 2014, was among the Top 50 best teachers of the world last year. Today, for the second year in a row, Serbia has its representative among the best and this is Katarina. For a small country on the world stage, this is huge success and an indicator that Serbian education is valuable and that we have great people who educate our children! Even 179 countries all over the world took part in the competition!

We would like to congratulate our national representatives for this year one more time: Tatjana Marković Topalović, physics teacher from Šabac and Dragan Kuveljić, general education teacher from Prijepolje. All three of them are excellent educators who have been representing our country and defending the colours of education with dignity for many years. It is an honour to have them in our team! More information about this year’s competition can be read here.

Katarina’s biography can also be found on the official website of the Global Teacher Prize competition here.
